Somehow during my career, I evolved from software geek (and proud of it!) to a pretty competent technology product marketing professional. This didn’t happen overnight, and it didn’t happen as a result of a prolonged and orchestrated professional training program.
It just… happened… over time as my career evolved and I figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up. And because I can be somewhat ADD, I learned how to do my job by absorbing bits and pieces of technology marketing wisdom from various sources – from books, to special classes – even cartoons from Dilbert to the works of Hugh MacLeod. Quick tidbits you might put in the “little black book of technology Product Marketing”.
So as I have successful mentored several engineers as they explored product management and marketing careers, I thought I’d share these tidbits here – with the occasional sidetrack from personal observations in the high-tech / software industry. So if you find any of the information here relevant or interesting to others, please pass it along.
